Hey Everyone,
An issue has come up that has frustrated many UMBC students. Until July 1, 2008, we did not have to pay for official transcripts from the Registrar's office. Now, we must pay $8 per transcript we obtain. This has angered many students because of the typical amount of transcripts that we need in our lifetime (for grad school, careers, etc.). A committee has been formed to address this issue and figure out exactly why this fee was initiated and how we can either reduce it or eliminate it.
I brought this issue up to the University System of Maryland Student Council (USMSC) meeting yesterday, and no other USM institution charges as much as we do for transcripts. I am figuring out the exact numbers now, but some institutions do charge a nominal fee after a certain amount of free transcripts. I am in contact with each institution and will post their transcript fees as soon as possible. With all the money UMBC students already pay for their education and living expenses, this has become an issue that the SGA wants to address as soon as possible!

UMBC doesn't care about it's students, just wants to suck our pockets dry as the professors forget about you and go on and do their own research.
where is all this money going to? not parking garages, not a better gym. i did see s few shiny new cop cars though
Are you kidding? No one will do anything about this, the fee will not be reduced. They have been planning this for a long time and the first proposed transcript fee was even more than the one you guys have now...trust me ;)
Isn't the money we pay to have all those credits on that sheet of paper enough? jeez, how much does paper cost?
but as others have pointed out...i'm not really surprised that umbc has found another way to get more of our money. They're really good at that!
ridiculous, by the time i graduate I'll probably be paying a maintenance fee to walk on the sidewalks.
I pay a lot to go here, unlike a lot of idiots who get a full ride just because of their race or they play a sport.
Most schools do charge students to fee to get copies of their transcripts. I was pleasantly surprised when I went in to get a few copies of my transcript last spring. We just have to deal or make some noise about it (although I think the decision is pretty firm). And there's nothing wrong with people who get scholarships to attend UMBC, anonymous. Maybe you should try to get some too and save yourself some money.
