Men's Basketball Goes to Binghamton!

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

For those who haven't seen the Facebook group, there are talks of sending buses to Binghamton next weekend for UMBC students to support the Men's Basketball team as they compete in the America East Tournament as the #1 seed.

http://umbc.facebook.com/event.php?eid=10472784618

The SGA has been trying to work with Athletics, RSA, and other organizations to make this happen. There is a proposal, that must go through the Senate and Finance Board first, to fund buses to go up to Binghamton, relieving students of this cost. However, there are still questions of liability (whether students can stay over night for the next day's game), handling of tickets, and how to get students on those buses.

After funding 3 tailgates this year, I'm really hoping that funding a trip for students to watch the team play will really make an impact on school spirit at UMBC. Please keep your eyes and ears open for updates on this amazing opportunity.

*UPDATE - 3/4/08*

The SGA Senate voted unanimously to provide $12,000 towards 4 fan buses for the Binghamton trip this weekend! The legislation will go through the Finance Board tonight at 5:30pm, and if passed there, we will have the capacity to send over 200 UMBC students to support our Men's Basketball team.

There is an exciting atmosphere here at UMBC, something this school rarely sees, if funding doesn't go through and students have to pay a ridiculous amount of money just to show school spirit, this atmosphere is going to fade away, how often does UMBC have a chance of going to the NCAA's?!?!?! the SGA should do everything in their power to make this as big as they can, help build on this new excitement, help put some serious faith into our student government whose first priority should be promoting the school name and helping the student body, this can be our student fees at work, help us get to Binghamton!!!

I really like to see the buses happen.. however the next realization is that not everybody is going to be able to go because there aren't that many seats so to those who can and are able I would suggest buy your own tickets, carpool and split the cost for a hotel room (5 people in one) that may be the BEST way to get as many people there AS possible.. and we are having to get buses on short notice.. BUT it would be GREAT if the SGA and everyone else helped with this, it would get a lot more active participation in the school and I for one think this is one of the greatest opportunities everyone may have while at umbc. GO DAWGS!!!

I agree with what Ruby said. How often is this going to happen? Hopefully more times! This is my first year at UMBC, and I have never had school spirit in my life, but when I got here I caught retriever fever! It would be a shame for myself, and other spirited students to have to miss out on this because we cannot afford to pay $60 plus dollars. LETS GO BIG DAWGS!

Get us some buses! We won't have a problem filling them and it will be a huge boost for school spirit.

i am so excited. Are you? UMBC, and no one can believe it. Who would have ever thought. Its crazy that the season is going so well. How can we expect our Boys to proform to the top most degree if they dont have a full dawg pound behind them? It would be horrible if no one ends up going because they dont have the money. We are talking about poor college students here. Most of the year students talk about how they wish UMBC was this and that. For the first time ever they are shut up and excited about their school. Lets keep this going by giving them a chance to do what most other big deal schools get to do, HAVE SCHOOL PRIDE.

Please get us some buses!! Our basketball team is making history this year, help as many people as possible to support them!!

UMBC is a Division I school and for the first time in a long time the men's basketball team is really showing that they are a serious DI team. A team's fan base is so crucial to their success. I think supporting them by bringing bus loads of people is the least we can do after a year of stellar performances like we have seen. You look at great athletic programs at schools like Duke and Maryland, and you see the huge fan base. This is a great opportunity to give students a chance to become truly invested in their school and take pride in being a Retriever. I think we need to do whatever it takes to make this happen because it will affect student morale in such a positive way.

It would def help to fuel our steadily growing school spirit...plus its been 22 years since we went to ncaa's!!! The bus arrangement shouldn't even be an issue...GET US SOME BUSES!!

i hope that the SGA will sponsor a bus for both the mens and womens tournaments, both teams have done fantastic this year and deserve some spirit at their games!

i believe this is a great idea!! I am all for school spirit!!! I just hope that everything is worked out. For example, I dont want lets say 60 ppl to say that they are going to stay over in the hotel.. then change their minds.. and there not be enough room on the bus going back.. understand? I am very excited about this too... but i just want to make sure that everything is in order. I hope that alot of ppl show interest and go!! I'll be there!!!! woot!!

This is an amazing opportunity for students to show school spirit and it would be a BIG help to the team. Like a many have said how often does our basketball team have this kind of success??? NEVER! This is the first time and we need to show support! PLEEEEEAAAASE get some buses.

Getting funded for buses shouldn't even be an issue! Don't make us pay a ridiculous amount of money for something as exciting as this can be. What atmosphere are we trying to create here, SGA?? A spirited school environment or an apathetic one?? I mean, I know you have to carefully decide on what to spend on but if we can create such a large pool of leftover money for imProve It, then I'm sure we can come up with funds for buses. Let us show those other fans we're not a school to trifle with! LET'S GO BIG DAWGS! :)

Some people, sadly, are still in denial about going up, but all I have to do is ask them to search for UMBC basketball on youtube. On that, you see students in a sold out RAC storm the court over an actual championship. People want to go. People want to be able to see a conference tournament and turn the city of Binghamton into a mini-Dawg Pound. I cannot stress enough how much the SGA needs to fund these buses. I cannot stress enough how much an overnight trip for 100+ students who will do nothing but behave outside the arena and cheer loud for UMBC's basketball team will help enhance UMBC's image. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to turn an away arena into our home court. We're still college students with a shortage of money, we're not wealthy alumni who can afford to take our families up there for a $500 weekend. This is desperately needed.

Since the RAC is offering buses for each individual day, I already know that I'll be there for both games (as well as the game at the RAC the following weekend). Given that it's seemingly ridiculous to ask us to take four 5 hour trips over the course of two days, SGA really needs to fund the overnight bus. They want us to have school spirit, but force us to jump through hoops to show it.

Regardless, Go 'Trievers!

"Dawg" might have sounded cool in 1976, but it is extremely lame now.

Whoa, downer! Who cares how people spell it! It's time to get ready to dance this March!

Hey, I'm a big fan of UMBC, it's just a pet peeve of mine. I'm ready to take our winning team into the 21st century and leave the dated "dawg" moniker behind!

I'm really excited about the prospect of seeing my schools name in my brackets this year. I want to be able to cheer them on all the way throw the AEC championships, and I cant do that without a ride up to Binghamton. the SGA should really step up to the plate and help with the funding of the buses. I'm sure that there are a bunch of other students such as myself who wouldn't be able to afford the full cost, but with the SGA supports, we could all go and support our dawgs!

MAKE IT HAPPEN SGA!!!

This year has had the most school spirit I've ever seen in my 4 years and we can keep it going all the way to the NCAA's. Last year the bus ride to UConn was free! Why not again? With the SGA's help we can fill up the stands with UMBC fans.

Let's show Binghamton what UMBC is all about! Please do everything in your power and more SGA to make this happen. HERE WE GO BIG DOGS!!!

I'm there. Dovit SGA and you'll be remembered kindly.

A Quote from umbc.edu: "...the Retrievers will compete in the post-season for the first time in the school’s 22-year Division I history." SGA, if you're having a tough time making a decision on funding the trip then just ask yourself one question, What would Jesus do?
