I'm not sure exactly how long it's been there, but I recently noticed the new digital sign on the ground floor of the engineering building. I've often thought it would be neat to have an iNet-like system for all of campus, not just the Commons. This looks like a pilot implementation of that idea - exciting!
From what I can tell, the ads are coming from the myUMBC spotlights, so it would seem that if you've placed an ad on Spotlight it will appear on the digital sign as well.

This sign has been up since around the beginning of the semester. More like it are coming, and you're right - if you put something in Spotlight, or if your event is listed as happening today in myUMBC, it'll pop up on these signs. It's a different system than iNet, but each of them have their different advantages.
@Jay:
It's too bad the systems aren't linked. Perhaps in the future?
I have no idea if there are plans to link the two since they both serve very different audiences, but it's not a bad idea at all.
